Founded in Falkirk in 1818 Russel & Aitken is one of the oldest legal firms in Scotland. From the start they have been associated with innovative new technologies and today they continue to maintain a modern and progressive approach to their business by using cutting edge technology to drive their competitiveness.

Russel & Aitken have trusted Red Mosquito to provide a full IT support and consultancy service for more than 50 staff at their premises in Falkirk and Alloa for over 11 years.

The Issues

Red Mosquito's relationship with Russel & Aitken began in 2002 when their existing IT systems were coming to the end of their useful life. Back then their systems were built on an ageing ëtoken-ringí network serviced via terminals linked to a central server. It was evident to Red Mosquito's consultants that a major upgrade was required to give Russel & Aitken the platform required to expand their business.

The Strategy

By standardising their desktop hardware and software across all staff and linking these to powerful new Windows servers we provided them with a platform suitable to deploy a cutting edge case management system for legal services. Russel & Aitken planned to enhance their competitiveness and profitability by the clever use of this specialised technology.

The Actions

Our first project was to bring them up to date by overseeing the upgrade of their infrastructure to modern Cat5 Ethernet cabling and deploying powerful rack-based servers including Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 with Microsoft Exchange Server 2000.

Over the following seven years the case management system proved its worth for Russel & Aitken and their systems grew in power and functionality as they moved away from the Small Business Server model to a range of powerful application servers running everything from digital dictation applications to storage, mail and their legal services CRM.

Now in 2014 Red Mosquito and Russel & Aitken have just successfully completed the migration of their critical business systems to a new virtualised hardware and software platform designed to guarantee their businesses successful continuity for the next decade. The new system, the third full system that we have delivered to this customer, includes ten virtual servers with an off-site disaster recovery solution designed to guarantee staff can continue working regardless of any eventuality.
