SOUTHSIDE ARTISTS

Local Businessman and Artist Emilio Fazzi talks about his love of Italy, Glasgow and Art.

I was introduced to painting by my Auntie Maria, still alive in Florence today, whose main interest in life is culture and the arts.  When I was a child she dragged me through the art galleries and museums of Italy and filled me with a passion for art, which along with my desire to be close to Tuscany, the land of my fathers, eventually inspired me to pick up a brush.  The long summer months of my youth were spent with my Italian friends who had all studied history of art in a country where every educated person really knew their artistic onions. Living in an area where every small hilltop town contains some priceless artistic gem we made a real effort to visit as many sites of artistic interest as we could. and were thus able to follow the development of painting from the early middle-ages right through to modern times.

I regularly go to my house in Ponte a Moriano near Lucca solely to paint from where I get an unrivalled choice of subject matter and inspiration. I also love painting Scotland’s countryside and shores but in colours that are the preserve of the Mediterranean.

As to artistic preferences, I like the work of Giotto and Fra Angelico, impressionists like Manet and Degas and modern painters such as Modigliani and Boldini.  Despite my italian roots however, my real artistic heroes are the Scottish Colourists and the Glasgow Boys.

Tayvallich view by Clare Leonard

Clare Leonard was born in Glasgow and studied for an Honours and Masters degree at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. In 1999 she relocated within London and began working from her Lee Green studio where she continued to develop her painting style. She now works from her garden studio at home where she lives with her husband and two children in Glasgow.

The artist works predominantly in acrylics layering rich contrasting colours onto canvas. The balance of scale, composition and texture play a vital role in the construction of her work.

Natural Scottish landscapes are the visual inspiration for her recent contemporary collection of abstract paintings. This body of work takes you on a visual journey to the Island of Arran and to the tiny haven of Tayvallich and surrounding coastline. Clare runs a successful weekly art classes for children and has also run creative workshops in her local primary school.

Niall McTeague

Niall is a mainly self taught artist from the south side of Glasgow. A dynamic and vibrant exponent of acrylic and mixed media, Niall gathers his subject matter from his extensive travels through Scotland and beyond. Dramatic landscapes, especially mountains and also seascapes are the main subjects of his portfolio and these themes overlap in paintings of sailing, water sports and skiing which capture the imagination of the viewer. He likes to show less conventional scenes which may seam a little unreal but are never contrived. These include unusually lit skies, unique cloud formations and dramatic seas.

A former member of the British Society of Painters he has exhibited successfully around Britain including being short listed for the Laing Art Show. He has sold many works by exhibition and commission in the UK and Ireland. Niall also works in pen and ink, drawing very detailed period architecture and scenes of nature.

Niall has travelled to all corners of Scotland, walking, climbing, cycling and sailing always taking his cameras to capture many scenes which may make the basis for a new piece of artwork or simply a new photograph for his commercial portfolio. He was also lucky to travel extensively, at all times of the year, when he worked as a land surveyor which took him to the Shetlands, Skye and Portpatrick to name but a few far flung locations. He has also travelled abroad painting scenes of some of these areas such as the Alps and Morocco.

Niall especially enjoys undertaking commisions sometimes working to a particular brief with subjects and location well defined or simply being asked to provide a painting based on a general idea by the client.
