£1000 grants for SMEs

Monday, 26 November 2018

A Cyber Grants Scheme has been launched in Scotland to help SMEs improve their defences against cyber threats. The grant scheme will contribute towards the cost of getting Cyber Essentials certification or Cyber Essentials Plus in place. Cyber Essentials is a UK Government backed accreditation, which requires 5 key controls to be implemented and will drastically reduce the risk of cyber-attacks. The scheme is administered by the National Cyber Security Centre and is increasingly being required for government tenders etc. The Information Commissioners Office which oversees GDPR in the UK promotes Cyber Essentials as a good first step towards addressing cyber security risks.

The Cyber Grants Scheme for SMEs is being run by Scottish Enterprise on behalf of the Scottish Government. SMEs can receive up to £1000 towards the cost of Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials plus certification.

To be eligible you must have:

  • You must be a small or medium enterprise (SME) with fewer than 250 employees
  • You must have a registered base in Scotland
  • You must operate IT with a connection to the internet

The Scottish Government have made £500,000 available for both SMEs and third sector organisations in Scotland.  Organisations can apply online and the scheme will run for up to 12 months or until funding runs out. SMEs can apply for the funding themselves or through their IT Support provider.  They can access the funds once certification is achieved.

You can apply via Scottish Enterprise here.

Third Sector organisations can apply here
